The SMS database Link facility builds upon the SMS Web Link to provide SMS access to back-end corporate databases and application systems.

Incoming messages are processed at the TextBack Message Centre in exactly the same way as for the SMS Web Link facility and HTTP requests are forwarded to specified websites. These websites, rather than acting as normal information servers, are written to invoke bespoke server-side applications to verify the data in the text message, to update databases with the texted data, or to run queries on the database and return the result data to the mobile.

If necessary, a series of SMS messages and responses may be linked together to take the mobile user through any desired sequence of data entry and validation.

The server-side applications may be coded in any language available on the web server platform, for example, Active Server Pages using VBScript or JavaScript on Microsoft platforms, Perl or C/C++ CGI programs on Linux/Unix platforms, Java for Java Server Pages etc. All of these languages/platforms offer facilities for directly accessing industrial-strength databases, for example, SQL Server, Oracle, DB2.

In addition, many software components are available for accessing mainframe-based data platforms.
